Boss Tweed Courthouse
Location: New York, NY
Address: 52 Chambers Street, New York, NY
Constructed and Opened: (1861-1872) (1877-1881)
Construction was interrupted in 1872 when the lead architect John Kellum died, and the corruption involved in the building’s construction was exposed. The project was completed twenty years after work began. It was delayed by the Civil War and corruption investigations.
Architect: John Kellum & Leopold Eidlitz.
The four and a half story courthouse was originally built in the Italianate style with Romanesque Revival interiors. The courthouse became a mixture of the two architects’ styles. It is the second oldest Manhattan government building after New York City Hall.
